Engineering Advising Priority Enrolls Certain Students in CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091

Some students will eventually have CHEM 2090: Engineering General Chemistry and CHEM 2091: Engineering General Chemistry Laboratory on their fall schedule (come July 1st, not before) for when they go to pre-enroll, while others will not. Engineering Advising priority enrolls many students in CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 because of specific situations that warrant those students taking this course in the fall and not waiting until spring semester to take it.

Students who will be priority enrolled in CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 for fall come July 1st

Potential Chemical Engineering Students: students who indicated in their Student Advising Profile (SAP) back in May that they are interested in pursuing Chemical Engineering, and who are not expecting AP or transfer credit for CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 or who are expecting this credit but will choose not to use it. These students must take CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 in the first fall semester because the required curriculum sequencing for Chemical Engineering depends on completion of CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 in the first fall semester to stay on track for taking CHEM 2080: General Chemistry II and CHEM 2081: General Chemistry II Laboratory in the spring.
Pre-Health Interest: Students who indicated in their Student Advising Profile that they are pursuing pre-health, and who are not expecting AP or transfer credit for CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 or who are expecting this credit but will choose not to use it, must take CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 in the first fall semester to stay on track for possibly taking CHEM 2080: General Chemistry II and CHEM 2081: General Chemistry II Laboratory in the spring.
Students not expecting credit for Calculus: Students who indicated in their Student Advising Profile that they are not expecting AP or transfer credit for calculus (MATH 1910) or who are expecting this credit but will choose not to use it, are not expecting AP or transfer credit for CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 or are expecting this credit but will choose not to use it, and who are not expecting AP or transfer credit for Physics or who are expecting this credit but will choose not to use it, must take CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 in the first fall semester since they do not have the proper pre-requisites yet to start with Physics (PHYS 1112 and 1110) in the fall.
Students who are highly interested in Biomedical Engineering (BME) and who DO NOT have Chemistry AP or transfer credit (or who choose not to use it). Due to the conflict with BIOMG 1350 in the fall, we highly recommend that these students take CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 in the fall and wait to take BIOMG 1350 until the spring. Come July 1st, check your schedule in Student Center. If you are a student who was priority enrolled in CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 for fall and feel you no longer need to take this course (due to now expecting AP or transfer credit, for example), you are free to drop the course during pre-enroll to free up a seat for someone else. However, we highly encourage you to first speak with Engineering Advising before doing so to discuss your options, as there is likely a very good curricular reason for you to stay in the course.

Upon connecting with Engineering Advising, it may be possible that we can drop you from CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 ahead of pre-enroll so that you don’t have to take time to do that. Again, we would be looking to ensure you have good reason to drop (i.e., AP or transfer credit for either Chemistry or Math).

Students who will not be priority enrolled in CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 for the fall

All other students besides those in the scenarios outlined above can likely wait to take CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 until second semester spring, if need be. If there are seats available in CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 for fall during pre-enroll or the Add/Drop period in August, these students can certainly try to enroll or get on the Chemistry waitlist. Otherwise, students likely can start in Physics (PHYS 1112 and 1110) in the fall instead, and can take CHEM 2090 and CHEM 2091 in the spring.
