NES 2670 COMBINED-XLIST The History and Politics of Modern Egypt (2022FA)
Egypt is the most populous and most influential country in the Arab world. Historically, its strategic geographic location at the crossroads of international trade routes has placed it at the center of historic great power and super power rivalries; its political and religious institutions carry weight across the Muslim world; and its music, movies, radio and television programs, and literature have had a great impact on the entire Arab world. This lecture class will explore the political and socio-cultural history of modern Egypt from the late 18th century to the present. We will explore Egyptian history under the Ottomans and Mamluks, the unsuccessful French attempt to colonize Egypt, and the British occupation of the country. We will then examine the development of Egyptian nationalism from the end of the 19th century to the 1919 Revolution— through Nasser’s pan-Arabism—to the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and beyond. By examining the several intense revolutionary moments which have punctuated Egypt’s modern history, we can contextualize the multilayered issues with which the country is struggling today. We will accomplish this with the aid of a variety of texts, movies, and primary sources.
